According to press reports, Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture has reportedly extended the emergency rule restricting the importation of animals from Texas and New Mexico, following the detection of new screwworm cases (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in those states. The original rule was reportedly issued earlier to protect Florida’s livestock industry. At the time of this note, no official instrument has been identified.

The screwworm is a pest that severely affects livestock, causing myiasis and economic losses. Florida, with a significant livestock production sector, aims to prevent its entry. Texas and New Mexico are transit states for cattle coming from Mexico, thus the restriction would impact the Mexico-U.S. commercial corridor.
